Sport Event Massage Course


The 1-day Sport Event Massage Course for Allied Practitioners is targeted for Sport Specific Health Professional members of RCCSS(C), SPC, CATA (provincial associations), and CASEM. The course can also be taken by non- sport practitioner members as well as students of these professions that treat athletes at all levels.

Developed and taught by CSMTA Sport Fellows. Their experiences range from treating at National and International sporting events, being part of the Canadian Health Services Team at major games, and being part of the Integrated Support Team for Provincial, National, and Professional teams. Emphasis is placed on the practical component, supported by evidence and current best practices.

Techniques learned in this course can effectively and easily be transferable in both sporting event and clinical practice.

Time and tested protocols for event massage will be explained so that participants will leave with confidence in implementing them to their athletes.

The course encompasses theory and techniques of pre-event, post-event and inter-event sport massage. The techniques that will be covered are compressions, cross-fibre massage, jostling, joint mobilization, effleurage and petrissage.

Below will be brief overview of the topics so that most of the concentration is on the practical component of the course:

  • Protocols when covering an athletic event.
  • Indications and contraindications for a variety of sport massage circumstances
  • Understanding of physiological and psychological effects of sport massage
  • Sport massage therapy’s role in the athletic environment
  • Being able to attain useful information in a quick and concise method to make the sport massage session more efficient.
  • Information gathered is based on the efficacy of sport massage.


NOTE:  CSMTA members wishing credit for this course for their Sport Fellow certification must take the 2 day Advanced Sport Massage Course. 


Participants will be given handouts 1 week prior to the course for pre-reading.

Participants will also be sent a ebook copy of Sport Massage Theory and Techniques for the Massage Therapist for more in-depth    information about Sport Massage.

Cancellations received more than 7 days before the course date will receive a full refund.  Cancellations received 7-days prior to the course date will receive a refund minus an administration fee of $50.00. Non-attendance at a course or cancellations received with less than 7-days notice will not be eligible for a refund.
