A belated warm welcome back to Canada for Jason White and Marcel Charland, who helped our Canadian athletes bring home 29 medals at this years Winter Olympic Games in Pyeong Chang. Although a privilege, we understand the huge sacrifice you both made being away from family and clinic for an extended period of time, to be part of the big Canadian family and pitch in as was needed. Announcement:
The University of Alberta is pleased to announce that John M. Hogg, ’86 BMedSc, ’88 MD, will be inducted into the Sports Wall of Fame as a builder of university sport. UAlberta President David H. Turpin will present Dr. Hogg and 20 other alumni with their awards on Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton. The Sports Wall of Fame honours athletes and builders who have made significant contributions to University of Alberta athletic programs.
(Dr. Hogg is the author of the "Sport Psychology: Foundations and Practice for the Massage Therapist", self-study course, published by CSMTA for the ISMDP.)
The idea that sports are mostly a mental exercise is one of the keys to winning, and when John Hogg, ’86 BMedSc, ’88 MD, introduced his innovative sport psychology courses at the University of Alberta, people paid attention. He was involved in 12 U of A sports championships and worked as a coach and sport psychologist in more than 10 sports, helping athletes ranging from Olympians to world champions. His expertise in the field of mental preparation also led to his work being shared through hundreds of publications and conference presentations. Hogg’s work as an innovator also extended to the U of A aquatics program. In 1978, he became head coach of the swim programs. Over the next 25 years, he restructured the entire program, combining the women’s and men’s swim teams to create one unified group of athletes. Hogg’s legacy is that of a coach, a teacher and a builder who believed that great improvements in sport are possible if coaches and athletes are given the tools to succeed. All community members are invited to celebrate Dr. Hogg’s accomplishments at the 2017 Alumni Awards.
Congratulations Dr. Hogg!
